LeRoy Green was born the son of Arthur John (“Ott”) and Gay Mershon Green on September the 23rd, 1918. As a young man, LeRoy worked on his parents’ dairy farm and at the McKee service station on the south side of Cordell. LeRoy Green and Letha Irene McKee were married on September 25th, 1938. From 1938 until 1942 he worked as a butcher in the United Supermarket in Cordell. In 1942, LeRoy Green was enlisted into the United States Army where he attained the rank of corporal. He became a corpsman, working both as a medic on the battlefield and as a surgical assistant. He served in the South Pacific and earned the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with a Bronze Star, a Bronze Arrowhead for participation in an initial assault landing, and a good conduct medal. LeRoy & Letha moved to Hollis in February of 1946 where he again worked as a butcher in a United Supermarket. Later, he leased a half section of land to farm and, in 1952, bought a meat processing plant which he & Letha owned and worked in until 1975. In April of 1957, LeRoy and Letha adopted their son, John Scott Green. During the mid to late 1970’s, LeRoy and Letha commuted between Hollis and Cordell, helping Leroy’s mother Gay on her farm Leroy eventually purchased the land on which Gay lived. They moved to Cordell in early 1979 and built a house there in 1983. LeRoy spent a lot of Sundays after church taking communion to those in the local nursing home whose health prohibited them from getting out of their room. After his mother’s death in 1991, LeRoy bought out his brother and sister’s share of the original Green farm and continued farming and running cattle until his retirement in 2003 at the age of 85. The Green farm was named by the State of Oklahoma as a Centennial Farm in October of 1999…something of which LeRoy was very proud. In semi-retirement he spent his days working on his land, especially the creek that ran through it. He and Letha also spent a lot of their time traveling to Oklahoma City for “mini-vacations” and caring for numerous aging relatives. In 2003, LeRoy and Letha moved to Bryan, TX to be closer to their son. They became residents of the Carriage Inn, an indoor apartment complex where they spent their days watching rodeos, bull riding, and movies on their television, and attending special events and country and western concerts. LeRoy Green went to be with his Lord on July 6, 2009. He was 90 yeas old. He is survived by his son, John Scott Green, his brother Buddy Green, Carl Lee Riles and Kathy Louise Hill. He is preceded in death by his wife, Letha Green, one sister, Lois Green McKee and his parents Arthur John (Ott) Green and Gay Mershon Green.
